Yes, for anyone whose work involves manual handling. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 requires employers to provide the training staff need, and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require them to assess and reduce manual handling risks. Training is a core part of reducing that risk.
Yes. A CPD-accredited online course covers the knowledge HSE expects: the risk factors, how injuries happen, the TILE approach and good handling technique. For heavy, awkward or specialist tasks, HSE expects training to fit the actual work, so add practical instruction on the job.
Ours takes about 75 minutes. Ours is split into short modules, so people can finish in one sitting or in stages around their shift, and download their certificate as soon as they pass.
There’s no fixed legal interval, and HSE doesn’t set one. Refresh it when tasks, loads or equipment change, after an incident, or when someone returns from a back injury, and check regularly that people are still using what they learnt.
Course facts
Short, interactive modules built around the HSE’s guidance on manual handling at work.
What the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 ask of employers and employees, in plain English.
Why backs, shoulders and joints get hurt, including the slow damage from repetitive tasks.
Task, Individual, Load and Environment: the simple way to think a lift through before you do it.
Plan the lift, keep the load close, avoid twisting and stooping, move smoothly, and put it down before adjusting.
Trolleys, cages and loads that need more than one person, and how to coordinate them safely.
When to use a trolley, hoist or other aid, and why avoiding the lift altogether comes first.
Manual handling injuries are among the most common causes of time off work, and most of them come from everyday lifting, not dramatic accidents.

Buying courses one at a time gets messy. With team licences on our e-learning platform, you enrol everyone at once, see who has finished and keep every certificate in one place for audits.
Many teams pair manual handling with fire marshal training and COSHH, so the whole site is covered. Ask us for team pricing.

CLARITY
TILE stands for Task, Individual, Load and Environment: the four things to consider before any lift. Some versions add O for Other factors, such as protective clothing. Our guide explains TILE with examples.
HSE’s good handling technique comes down to: think before you lift, keep the load close to your waist, adopt a stable position, get a good hold, start in a good posture (a slight bend of the back, hips and knees is better than fully flexing the back or squatting), avoid twisting, move smoothly and put the load down before adjusting it. Full detail is on HSE’s website.
There’s no legal expiry date, but employers are expected to keep training up to date. How often to refresh depends on the risks involved, and on changes to the work.
Anyone who lifts, lowers, pushes, pulls or carries loads as part of their job. That includes warehouse, delivery and retail staff, carers, kitchen and cleaning teams, and office staff who move boxes or equipment.

This course covers handling objects and loads. Moving and handling people, for example in a care setting, needs specific training. Tell us about your team and we’ll point you to the right option. See our care sector training.
