The Short Answers

What’s the difference between a fire marshal and a fire warden?

Nothing. Fire marshal and fire warden are two names for the same role: the people nominated to help prevent fires, raise the alarm and get everyone out safely. The legal duties, the training and the certificate are the same whichever title your workplace uses.

Is fire marshal training a legal requirement?

In most workplaces, yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to appoint enough competent people to help with fire safety and evacuation, and to give them adequate training. Scotland and Northern Ireland have equivalent laws.

How many fire marshals does my workplace need?

The law doesn’t set a number or a ratio: your fire risk assessment decides. Make sure there are enough to cover every floor and area, every shift, holidays and sickness. Our guide to fire marshal duties explains how to work it out.

Is online fire warden training accepted?

Yes. A CPD-accredited online course covers the knowledge fire marshals need. Add a short walk-round of your own site (escape routes, call points, assembly point and extinguishers) and take part in your fire drills, so they know your building as well as the theory.

What the Fire Marshal Course Covers

Everything a nominated fire marshal or fire warden needs to know, in short online modules.

  1. The Fire Marshal’s Role

What fire marshals and wardens do day to day, during an alarm and afterwards, and what the law expects.

  2. How Fires Start and Spread

The fire triangle, common causes of workplace fires, and how smoke and fire travel through a building.

  3. Fire Prevention and Daily Checks

Spotting hazards, keeping escape routes and fire doors clear, and the weekly and monthly checks.

  4. Raising the Alarm and Evacuating

Sweeping your area, guiding people out, the assembly point and the roll call.

  5. Fire Extinguishers

The types of extinguisher, which fire each one is for, and when not to tackle a fire at all.

  6. People Who Need Help

Visitors, contractors and anyone with a personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP).

  7. After the Alarm

Reporting to the fire service, recording drills and incidents, and feeding back into the fire risk assessment.

What Fire Marshals Do

Fire marshals are the people everyone looks to when the alarm goes off. Most of their work, though, happens long before that.

A fire marshal’s duties:

  • Keep escape routes and fire doors clear
  • Carry out and record regular checks
  • Raise the alarm and sweep their area
  • Guide people to the assembly point and report in

Making It Work in Your Building

The online course gives your fire marshals the knowledge. To make it count, add a short walk-round of your own site: the escape routes, call points, extinguishers and the assembly point. Then make sure every fire marshal takes part in your fire drills.

Your fire marshal arrangements should match your fire risk assessment. If you need help with assessments generally, our risk assessment training covers the method, and our health and safety courses cover the rest of the team.

CLARITY

Fire Marshal Training: Common Questions

Do fire marshals have to fight fires?

No. A fire marshal’s first job is getting people out safely. They should only use an extinguisher on a small fire if they’re trained, it’s safe to do so and they have a clear way out. Most of the role is prevention and evacuation.

Does a fire marshal certificate expire?

There’s no legal expiry date. The Fire Safety Order says training must be repeated periodically where appropriate, and it should be refreshed straight away if the building, layout, risks or evacuation plan change.

Who should be a fire marshal?

Someone who is usually on site, calm under pressure and confident directing others. Many workplaces pick team leaders, receptionists and premises staff, with cover for every floor and every shift.

What does a fire marshal do day to day?

They keep an eye on fire safety in their area: escape routes and fire doors kept clear, no overloaded sockets, extinguishers in place and checks recorded. They also help with fire drills and keep the fire risk assessment up to date.

Can we train all our fire marshals at once?

Yes. With team licences on our e-learning platform, you can enrol all your fire marshals, track who has finished and keep their certificates on file. Ask us for team pricing.
