Anyone who carries out, signs off or reviews risk assessments: supervisors, managers, safety representatives and business owners. The law expects risk assessments to be done by someone competent, which means they understand the method and the hazards in the work.
The HSE’s five steps are: 1 identify the hazards; 2 assess the risks (who might be harmed and how, and what you already do to control them); 3 control the risks; 4 record your findings; 5 review the controls and update them when things change. Our guide explains each of the 5 steps.
If you employ five or more people, you must record the significant findings of your risk assessment. With fewer, it’s still sensible to write it down, because it’s the easiest way to show what you’ve done and to check it’s being followed.
For most everyday workplace risks, yes: it teaches the method and gives you a certificate. Managers who need to cover more hazards, legal duties and incident investigation should take IOSH Managing Safely (from £120 + VAT), which teaches risk assessment in depth.
Course facts
A practical walk through the HSE’s method, so your next risk assessment is quicker, clearer and actually used.
What the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require, and what “suitable and sufficient” means.
The difference between a hazard and a risk, and how to spot the hazards people stop noticing.
The HSE’s five steps, from identifying hazards to reviewing and updating the assessment.
Judging likelihood and severity, and using a simple risk rating or matrix to decide what comes first.
The hierarchy of control: eliminate, substitute, engineer, organise, then protect with PPE.
Writing findings people can follow, sharing them, and knowing when to review.
A risk assessment only protects people if it’s accurate, specific to the job and actually followed. Most go wrong on one of those three.

CLARITY
Whenever something significant changes (new equipment, people, processes or premises), after an accident or near miss, and at regular intervals. Many businesses review each assessment at least once a year.
A simple grid that rates risk by combining how likely harm is with how serious it would be. It helps you decide which risks to deal with first. The course shows how to use one without overcomplicating it.
It teaches the general method, which applies to every assessment. Some hazards also need a specific assessment, such as COSHH, manual handling and fire risk. The same five steps sit underneath all of them.
This online course focuses on the risk assessment method. IOSH Managing Safely is a 3-day course for managers that covers risk assessment alongside legal duties, hazards, incident investigation and measuring performance, and leads to an IOSH certificate.
