ONLINE COURSE
Our online banksman course covers why reversing accidents happen and the crucial role a banksman plays in preventing them: safe systems of work, risk assessment and PPE, a banksman’s duties on site, how drivers and banksmen work together, vehicle safety checks and the standard hand and verbal signals. It’s CPD approved, takes about 40 minutes and you can try the first module free.

A banksman (also called a signaller or vehicle marshal) is the person who guides a vehicle or plant safely while it reverses or manoeuvres, keeping pedestrians, objects and the driver safe. They use agreed hand and verbal signals and keep the area clear until the manoeuvre is finished.
The three main types of reversing accident, how management prevents them through risk assessment, safe systems of work and PPE, the law that applies, a banksman’s role and duties on site, the rules for drivers, vehicle hazard checks, and the industry-standard hand and verbal signals.
Employers must organise workplaces so vehicles and pedestrians can move safely (Workplace Regulations 1992, and CDM 2015 on construction sites), and the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations 1996 say hand signals must be used where needed to guide hazardous manoeuvres. Training the people who give those signals is how employers meet that duty.
Course facts
Three modules, each with a short multiple-choice test. You need 70% to pass each one.
The three main categories of reversing accident, and the risk assessments, safe systems of work and PPE that prevent them.
The law that applies, a banksman’s role and duties on site, and the rules for drivers so both can work together safely.
Vehicle hazard safety checks, and the industry-standard hand and verbal signals used during manoeuvres.
This course gives your banksmen and supervisors the knowledge: why reversing accidents happen, what the law expects and how signals work. The signals themselves need practice, so pair the course with a run-through on your own site, with your vehicles, your routes and the signals your team has agreed.
For the bigger picture of site safety, add Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and risk assessment training.
