It’s an introduction to health and safety on and around construction sites. Ten short modules cover the legal basics, risk assessment and safe working, then the hazards new starters meet most: working at height, manual handling, plant and noise, dust, fire, electricity, chemicals, vehicles and PPE.
It prepares you for it. For the green Labourer card, CSCS needs the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment from an awarding body on its list (or an approved alternative), plus a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test passed within the last two years. This course teaches what the Level 1 Award covers. Ask us which accredited exam you'll sit before you book, and see our guide to getting a CSCS green card.
It’s aimed at people starting out in the construction industry, such as new labourers and site operatives. Employers can also use it as part of a company induction, so every new starter gets the same grounding in site safety before they go on site.

Yes. The course can be used as part of a company induction process, so new starters arrive with the same basic knowledge of site hazards. Your site-specific induction still matters: it covers the hazards, rules and emergency arrangements on your particular site.
Build on it with online courses for the hazards you meet most, such as asbestos awareness, working at height or abrasive wheels. Many site teams also run regular toolbox talks to keep safety front of mind between courses.
