ONLINE COURSE
Our online legionella training explains what Legionnaires’ disease is, where legionella grows, the law and HSE’s L8 Approved Code of Practice, and how to manage and monitor the risk in water and cooling systems. It’s for building and facilities managers, maintenance staff and landlords with responsibility for water systems. It’s CPD-accredited and self-paced, with a certificate on completion, and the first module is free to try.

Legionella awareness training explains how legionella bacteria grow in water systems, how people catch Legionnaires’ disease, and what the law expects of those who control premises. HSE’s L8 says inadequate management, lack of training and poor communication are all contributory factors in outbreaks, so the people involved need to be competent, trained and aware of their responsibilities.
The duty holder, usually the employer or the person in control of the premises, must manage the risk. L8 says they should appoint a competent responsible person for day-to-day control, and that everyone who implements the control measures should be suitably informed, instructed and trained, with regular refreshers and training records kept.
Not on its own. L8 says competence comes from ability, experience, instruction, information, training and resources, and that training is essential but not the only factor. This course builds the knowledge. Whoever carries out your legionella risk assessment must still be competent to do so, and that may mean outside help.

Risks, prevention, testing, monitoring and water sampling for cooling systems.
HSE’s L8 Approved Code of Practice sets out the roles.
Legionella is a biological agent under COSHH, so it sits alongside your other hazardous substance controls. See COSHH training and our guide to the COSHH Regulations 2002.
This is awareness and management training. It gives you enough knowledge to start a legionella control programme, or to make informed choices when you commission others to do it. It isn’t a qualification to carry out legionella risk assessments, water sampling or water treatment for other people. If nobody in your organisation has the competence you need, L8 says you may need to appoint people from outside, and take reasonable steps to check their competence. For a structured approach to risk generally, see our risk assessment training.

CLARITY
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and COSHH require employers to provide suitable information, instruction and training, and L8 applies that to legionella. It says those appointed to control the risk must be properly trained to a level that ensures tasks are done safely and competently, and receive regular refresher training.
Landlords have a legal duty to assess and control the legionella risk for their tenants, even when renting a room in their own home. HSE says most landlords can assess the risk themselves and don’t need to be professionally trained or accredited. A short course helps you understand the risk, or choose someone competent to help.
L8 says those who implement control measures should receive regular refresher training, and that you keep records of initial and refresher training. It doesn’t set a fixed interval. Refresh it when your water systems, the risk assessment or the people responsible change.
The course is aimed mainly at building and facilities managers and maintenance professionals with nominated responsibilities for water systems. It’s also useful for duty holders, responsible persons and landlords who need to understand the risk and oversee the people managing it.
