Emergency First Aid at Work: Online Annual Refresher

Our Emergency First Aid at Work online annual refresher keeps qualified first aiders’ knowledge fresh between certificates: CPR and AEDs, choking, bleeding, shock, burns and more. It’s the yearly refresher HSE strongly recommends, taken online with a certificate on completion, and the first module is free. It doesn’t replace a practical EFAW or FAW course, which every workplace first aider still needs.

The Short Answers

What is an emergency first aid at work refresher?

It’s a short course for people who already hold an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate. HSE’s guidance L74 strongly recommends that first aiders do annual refresher training during each three-year certificate, to keep basic skills up to date. This online course covers the knowledge side of that refresher.

Does an online first aid course qualify you as a workplace first aider?

No. HSE strongly recommends that the practical parts of first aid training are assessed by direct observation, so an EFAW or FAW qualification needs face-to-face practice and assessment. This online refresher is for first aiders who already hold that qualification. It doesn’t start, renew or extend a certificate.

How long does a first aid at work certificate last?

All workplace first aid certificates, whether FAW, EFAW or other appropriate training, are valid for three years, according to HSE’s L74. Employers need to arrange requalification before they expire. An EFAW requalification is the same length and content as the original course, and FAW requalification takes two days.

What This Online Refresher Is, and Isn’t

Searching for a first aid course online? Here’s the honest picture.

  • It is an annual refresher for people who already hold a current EFAW or FAW certificate. HSE’s L74 strongly recommends that first aiders do annual refresher training during any three-year certificate period, and says HSE doesn’t specify how those courses are designed.
  • It isn’t an EFAW or FAW qualification, or a requalification. L74 says the practical parts of first aid training should be assessed by direct observation, and blended courses must allow enough classroom time for that.
  • It doesn’t extend a certificate. If a first aider doesn’t requalify before their certificate expires, HSE says they’re no longer considered competent to act as a first aider at work.

So the usual pattern is: a practical EFAW or FAW course, an annual refresher in years one and two (this course can do that job), then a practical requalification before the three years are up.

How Many First Aiders Do You Need?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate first aid equipment, facilities and people. How many first aiders you need, and whether they need EFAW or FAW, comes from your first aid needs assessment. Our guide to the first aid needs assessment walks you through it, and the accident book guide covers the records that go with it.

CLARITY

Common Questions

Is annual first aid refresher training mandatory?

No. HSE says annual refresher training isn’t a mandatory requirement, but it strongly recommends it to employers, to help qualified first aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first aid procedures. Without it, skills can fade over three years.

What’s the difference between EFAW and FAW?

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) covers the emergency skills, such as CPR, choking, bleeding and shock. First Aid at Work (FAW) covers those plus a wider range of injuries and illnesses. Your first aid needs assessment tells you which your workplace needs. Both need practical training and assessment.

Can I renew my EFAW certificate online?

Not with this course. HSE’s L74 says an EFAW requalification should be the same duration and content as the initial EFAW course, and strongly recommends that practical skills are assessed by direct observation. This online course is for the annual refreshers in between.

Who should take this refresher?

Qualified first aiders with a current EFAW or FAW certificate who want their annual refresher, and employers who want a simple way to deliver and record it for every first aider. It’s also useful background for appointed persons, but it doesn’t make anyone a qualified first aider.

Can we refresh all our first aiders and track it?

Yes. Enrol every first aider on our e-learning platform, see who has finished and keep their certificates in one place, so you can show refreshers are happening. Use the form on this page and we’ll send team pricing within one working day.
