ONLINE COURSE
Our online asbestos awareness training shows workers how to recognise asbestos-containing materials, where they were used and how to avoid disturbing them. It’s for tradespeople, maintenance staff and anyone whose work could disturb the fabric of a building. Take it on any device, get your certificate on completion and try the first module free. It is an awareness course only.

It’s the first level of asbestos training HSE describes. It teaches workers the properties of asbestos and its effects on health, where it is likely to be found in buildings and plant, what to do in an emergency and how to avoid exposure. It helps people avoid disturbing asbestos, not work with it.
Anyone liable to disturb asbestos during normal work, and the people who supervise them. HSE lists general maintenance workers, electricians, plumbers, joiners, decorators, plasterers, roofers, shop fitters, gas fitters, heating engineers, alarm and data installers, architects and building surveyors, among others.
Yes, for those workers. Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires employers to give adequate information, instruction and training. HSE recognises e-learning as a valid way to deliver asbestos awareness, provided it meets regulation 10 and the Approved Code of Practice L143.
Course facts
Four modules, each ending in multiple-choice questions. You need 100% on each test to pass, with three attempts.
What asbestos is, why it is so dangerous when its fibres are released and the diseases exposure can cause.
The types of asbestos, the products and materials likely to contain it and where you might come across them at work.
The steps to take to minimise the risk, and what to do if you find or suspect asbestos-containing materials.
The law that applies to work with asbestos, including the Control of Asbestos Regulations, and the duties it places on employers and workers.
Asbestos awareness is about avoiding work that could disturb asbestos. HSE is clear that it will not prepare workers or self-employed contractors to carry out work with asbestos-containing materials.
If someone plans to do work that will disturb asbestos, such as drilling into asbestos materials, removing asbestos floor tiles or repairing asbestos cement sheeting, they need a higher level of training for non-licensable work, including notifiable non-licensed work. Most work with higher risk materials must be done by licensed contractors.
HSE also says attending a course on its own does not make anyone competent: competence builds through training, on-the-job learning, instruction and assessment. Use a training needs analysis to decide the right level for each role, and plan work with a method statement.
HSE says there is no legal requirement to repeat a full formal awareness course every 12 months. Some form of refresher should still be given, as necessary, so knowledge is maintained. HSE suggests it can be e-learning or part of other health and safety updates, such as a toolbox talk from a competent supervisor.
Regulation 10 asks for training at regular intervals, adapted when the type or methods of work change significantly. Many certificates carry an expiry date, but HSE notes that expiry does not always mean full retraining is mandatory.

CLARITY
No. This is an awareness course only. It does not qualify anyone to do work that disturbs asbestos. Non-licensable work needs further, job-specific training, and most work with higher risk asbestos materials must be carried out by a licensed contractor.
HSE says there is no legal requirement to hold a certificate of training before working with asbestos, and a certificate is not proof of competence. What the law requires is adequate information, instruction and training. A certificate is still useful evidence for your training records, and many clients and main contractors ask to see one.
HSE says it should cover the properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased lung cancer risk for asbestos workers who smoke; the types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos in buildings and plant; general emergency procedures; and how to avoid the risk of exposure.
This course is approved by the bodies shown in the course facts. HSE’s test is whether training meets regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the Approved Code of Practice L143. If a client or main contractor asks for a specific accreditation, such as UKATA or IATP, check with them before you buy. Our store also has an IATP-approved version: ask us.
The course explains that asbestos was widely used by the construction industry right up until the year 2000, so it can still be present in many buildings. It is a risk when materials are damaged or disturbed and fibres are released. That is why trades who drill, cut or strip out building fabric need to recognise it first.
